Our Association

Arise of the association


The bowling society "The True Friends" was founded on Sunday 23 October 1910 during a meeting in the café "De Wijngaard"(the vintage) where the bowling lane (bolletra) is. According to Gerard Vervaeke (see foreword) is our association the oldest club in the province (West Flanders)

During the foundation meeting who was held on the initiative of a provisional governing board the rules were established and all people present became members of the governing board and were unanimously confirmed in their function.
Some of these rules are of course no longer applied. The function "the Reeve" doesn't exist anymore and the governing board remains in function untill their dismissal.
The gaps which arisen this way then are filled up with new members.

In the year 1960 the association celebrated its 50th year old existence and was granted for this occasion the authorisation to use the title" Royal " in the name( The Royal bowling association "The true Friends").


There are other associations which can conduct the royal title but according to reports our association would be the only feather bowling society in the province whith this honourable title!

The history of our bowling association is characterised by the continuity. Only a little has changed during all those years.
The playing lane is still housed at the same place, the name was never modified and until now the society knew only six Chairmans:

  • Emile Herman (1910-1919)
  • Alphonse Veranneman (1919-1949)
  • Gerard Vermeulen (1949-1978)
  • Roger Cauwelier (1978-2000 and 2001-2004)
  • Geert Laheye (2000-2001 en 2004-2007
  • Pascal Lapanne (2007-??)
Within 3 years we celebrate the 100th year old existence of our society. We hope to arouse the interest for this splendid pasttime game and force up the member number during this remaining period.

Producing this Internet site is a first attempt to do this and give some information about the game
