It seems that bowling is as old as humanity.
Who's to doubt that there was already thrown in the oldest times with stones to
targets, or to touch objects, or reach a line or point at some distance? In many English writings one makes report of the fact that the bowling game
already existed with the ancient Egyptians.
One of their favorite "hobby's" was a game where they rolled round harsh stones to stone
pins. Tracks of this game would be found in sepulchres of 5000 B.C.
What concerns Europe the brittons have the honour on the fact that the organized
bowling game started in their country in the 13th century.
The Southhampton bowling
Club is the oldest club of Great Britain for what concerns the green bowls game. It was founded in 1299 and is still in function! At present we know dozens of types of bowling games arround the whole world, even if we restrict the definition to the game on the ground, in contrast to balls thrown in the air. Then one will also have introduced modifications to the playing field and it's dimensions, as well as in other forms of the ball, ranging from less spherical to more cylindric (like a wheel of cheese ). In certain countries people play on lawns, in other countries they preferr to play on rammed down meadow ground. In former days people usually played inside, at present one generally plays inside. The raw material from which the balls are fabricated, has also undergone thorough changes too. In certain bowling games, wooden balls have been replaced by synthetic substances, becoming popular in the last 50 years.
The consequence of this evolution is that today many types of bowling games exist, each with their own charm and attractiveness. It is our opinion that all these game a common source or pedigree have. |
